Shapes that maximise sparkle
Round is the most familiar for a reason: its facet pattern returns more light than any other cut, so it reads brightest across a room. Cushion softens the square outline into rounded corners and gives a slightly warmer, more scattered fire. Radiant takes the brilliant faceting of a round and puts it inside a rectangular outline, which is a good middle ground if you want sparkle without a circle.
Shapes that look larger for the carat
Elongated cuts spread their weight across the finger, so they appear bigger than a round of the same carat weight. Oval is the most popular of these and gently lengthens the hand. Marquise is the most dramatic, with pointed ends that stretch the line further still. Pear sits between the two, rounded at one end and pointed at the other, and can be worn with the point facing either way.
Shapes with a quieter, architectural look
Emerald is step cut rather than brilliant faceted, so instead of sparkle you get broad flashes of light and a clear view into the stone. It rewards a well-made diamond because there is nowhere for inclusions to hide. Asscher is the square version of that same step cut, with a deeper, more mirrored centre. Princess keeps sharp square corners but uses brilliant faceting, so it stays lively.
And one that is purely personal
Heart is a technical cut to get right — the two halves must match and the cleft has to be crisp — and it is chosen for what it says rather than for how it performs in light.
A practical way to narrow it down
- Want maximum brilliance? Start with round, cushion or radiant.
- Want the most visible size for your budget? Start with oval, marquise or pear.
- Prefer clean lines to sparkle? Start with emerald or asscher.
- Have an active job or wear gloves often? Rounded outlines snag less than pointed ones.
